Dick Kelty was the person who invented the first backpack. It was made of the aluminum frame. His work was partly responsible for seducing people to get out of their home with a lot of things on their back. Dick Kelty was a hiker and he was fond of discovering the new places but in that ages, the best packs were available only in the army in the form of rucksacks. Rucksacks were very heavy and uncomfortable to carry.

So Kelty got the idea of a backpack in 1951 for his personal use. He was hiking with his friend in the Sierra Nevada. He observed that his friend has transformed the weight by inserted the wooden supports of his rucksack in his hip pockets.

This thing was an innovation that enabled his friend to carry the weight in a more comfortable way and keep him stand straight. When he came back home, he started to invent the first lightweight backpack with the use of nylon and lightweight aluminum tubs.

He got a loan of $500 and started to work on his idea of a lightweight bag in his garage and made a lightweight backpack by using aluminum frame stitched with nylon and then sold a piece of such backpack for $24.

Then in 1972, he sold his company Kelty Pack to the CML Group in Boston and became the chairman of the company.
